Leif E’s Story:
Leif E’s creative journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the unwavering power of art. Known through online networks as Leif’s Paintings, Leif has built a thriving career in art markets and virtual spaces, despite facing life-altering challenges. Reflecting on the last two years, Leif shares, “My creative journey has been what’s kept me afloat.” After moving back to Texas from the United Arab Emirates with a mobility disability, Leif used artistic skills to carve out a path to independence.
Upon returning to the U.S., Leif had to rebuild both a career and the physical ability to navigate everyday life. “I knew the only thing I could do was rely on my art and the skills I had spent years cultivating,” Leif explains. Leif initially found success at a local art market designed for those who didn’t quite fit in. Over time, a small booth of 10 prints grew into a flourishing business. As the business expanded, Leif continually found creative solutions to daily challenges.
Even simple tasks have required extraordinary innovation. From modifying a wheelchair with rollerblade wheels and hand-sewn back upholstery to crafting finger braces out of wire, Leif has used creativity as a survival tool. “In any given part of my life there is something I have had to use my creativity to solve; problems most people would never have considered,” Leif states. Whether adapting painting tools or mobility equipment, Leif actively demonstrates the powerful intersection of problem-solving and creativity. Leif’s resourcefulness highlights how creativity can transform daily challenges into opportunities for growth. Ultimately, Leif’s journey underscores the impact of innovation in both art and life.
Leif’s artwork has touched people worldwide. “I have heard stories from people in all corners of the world saying they found a piece of themselves in my work,” Leif says, describing the honor of helping others feel seen and represented through their creations. Now, thanks to opportunities like the Creativity Leads to Success Scholarship, Leif can focus on art while attending school, providing financial support, and living a life that is not about mere survival but about thriving.
Calder H’s Story:
Calder H’s journey as a double above-knee amputee and college quarterback is a powerful example of perseverance and creativity. Playing football on prosthetic legs, Calder has faced numerous challenges that require innovative solutions. “Most people face problems that need an immediate solution every day, but most people would never believe some of the situations I have been faced with over the years and how I’ve had to get really creative to come up with a way forward,” Calder explains. From learning how to adapt his equipment to managing unexpected moments on the field, like a blade breaking during a game, Calder has never backed down from finding ways to keep playing the sport he loves.
One challenge has been finding cleats for his running blades. Since football demands traction, adapting cleats took time. Calder and his dad, through trial and error, worked diligently. Eventually, they found a creative solution that kept him competitive on the field. “We’ve worked for several years to perfect this setup,” he shares, proving persistence and innovation can overcome obstacles.
Calder’s family has been a crucial part of his journey. “I am so thankful for a family that supports my dreams,” Calder says. Their support helped him think outside the box for solutions and continue moving forward. Calder hopes to collaborate with a shoe company to design cleats for athletes using prosthetics. “I want to help kids like me,” Calder says, hoping his story inspires others to pursue their dreams.
Meghan D’s Story:
Meghan D’s music journey showcases her resilience, passion, and commitment to helping others through her art. She started playing violin at age four. However, she shifted her musical path when she lost her vision at age nine. The incurable retinal disease prevented her from relying on sight reading. Embracing the challenge, Meghan learned Irish fiddle music entirely by ear. Reflecting on this transition, she says, “I could learn that style of music by ear (no sight reading for me!).” Later, in high school, she shifted to guitar and set her sights on Berklee College of Music. After years of dedication and countless performances, she realized her dream.
Now, Meghan is studying music therapy at Berklee. She wants to share music’s healing power with others. “Music helped me cope with losing my vision,” Meghan shares. Meghan aims to help others overcome their challenges. She has worked with special needs students and stroke/brain injury patients. Now, she’s preparing for an internship at the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston, which will complete her certification as a licensed music therapist.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Meghan continues to perform in Boston and her hometown of Santa Barbara. She supports charities benefiting the visually impaired. She’s performed at galas for organizations like the National Braille Press and the Lighthouse in San Francisco. Her dedication to giving back is clear.
Meghan’s creativity extends beyond her performances, as she also enjoys songwriting. She recently released her first single, “Any Luck,” which she describes as a proud accomplishment: “I also really enjoy writing music! Last year I released my first single: ‘Any Luck.’” She’s excited to release her debut EP very soon. As we conclude this celebration, we’re reminded of how passion and dedication shape one’s journey.
