How To Paint a Hideaway Table:

Step 1: Fix chipped veneer and sand

First, I pulled off the chipped veneer on the edges, removing it completely gave me a blank canvas to start from. I knew I was going to sand it to raw wood, so I skipped the cleaning and went straight to sanding. It’s clear when you need to sand further if there’s a grey tinge to the wood.

Step 2: Clean thoroughly and paint the legs

Secondly, I finally cleaned the pieces with White Lightning after sanding and I painted the stool flaps and legs with Black Sands which made a sweet contrast to the natural wood. I also used a Round Synthetic Brush which works well for legs and spindles and a flat angled brush for the tops of the stool.

Step 3: Apply stain to top

Then, Au Naturel is a new water-based stain from Dixie Belle, I squeezed it onto the tabletop and used the Foam and Dandy Brush  to apply it. If you are wanting a more transparent outcome, then wipe off excess or for a more opaque look, I applied another coat and didn’t wipe it off.

Step 4: Seal with a clear coat for durability

In conclusion, I stained the central panel of the stools and the bottom mechanisms because paint would be too thick and this area rubs often. I gave the paint and stain 24 hours to dry before adding the top coat, then I did 2 coats of the Clear Coat in Flat.
