At Dixie Belle, we believe painting should be simple, fun, and rewarding. That’s why so many of our customers love the phrase “just clean & paint.” In most cases, you don’t need a complicated list of prep steps before refreshing your piece—you can simply give it a good cleaning with White Lightning and start painting. But sometimes, a little extra prep goes a long way, and that’s when Bonding BOSS steps in.
So how do you know when you can just paint, and when Bonding BOSS is your best friend? Let’s break it down.
Step 1: Start with a Clean Surface
No matter what you’re painting, the first step is always cleaning.
Use White Lightning, available in both concentrate and ready-to-use formulas, to remove dirt, grease, or grime from your piece. Be sure to rinse well (with fresh water) after cleaning—this helps your paint adhere properly and keeps hidden oils from affecting your finish.

Step 2: Assess Your Surface
This is where you’ll decide whether to grab your paint brush—or reach for Bonding BOSS.
-
Just Clean & Paint:
If your piece is made of unfinished wood, previously painted furniture, or a non-slick surface that’s already paint-friendly, you’re good to go! After cleaning, grab your favorite color and start painting. -
Use Bonding BOSS:
If your project involves slick, stained, smelly, or stubborn surfaces, Bonding BOSS is your solution. Apply it when working on:- Glass
- Metal
- Formica
- Laminate
- Surfaces with stubborn stains, bleed-through, or odors
Bonding BOSS acts as an “all-in-one problem solver,” ensuring your paint adheres and your finish looks flawless.

Step 3: Happy Painting!
Once your surface is ready, the fun begins.
- With Chalk Mineral Paint, you’ll enjoy a smooth, flat finish that’s perfect for layering, distressing, or customizing with Belles & Whistles like transfers, decoupage papers, and waxes.
- With Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint, you’ll love the built-in stain-blocking primer and topcoat for a strong, durable finish with minimal steps.
- With Terra Clay Paint, you’ll get a highly pigmented, artisan-friendly clay formula that’s ideal for bold colors, blending, and textured finishes.
Choose from over 100 colors across our lines, grab your brush, and let your creativity flow.

The Bottom Line
When in doubt, remember this:
- Most projects = just clean & paint.
- Slick, shiny, or stained surfaces = Bonding BOSS first.
These simple steps help you create a long-lasting, beautiful finish—without overcomplicating the process.

I just tried this on a glass lamp base and IT DID NOT WORK. I followed the directions meticulously: cleaned it, let the first coat dry for 4 hours. Let the second coat dry for over 24 hours and I could scratch it off easily with my fingernail. BRING BACK SLICK STICK!
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback—we’re sorry to hear you had this experience! Bonding BOSS is designed to work on slick surfaces like glass, so it’s not the result we’d expect. One thing to note is that while it may feel dry to the touch, it can take longer to fully cure depending on temperature and humidity. Allowing extra cure time often makes a big difference in adhesion.
We truly appreciate your input and will be sure to pass this along to our team. If you’d like, our customer service team can help troubleshoot further—would you like me to share their contact info?
