How to Use Slick Stick
What is Slick Stick?
Slick Stick allows you to paint shiny, slick, or slippery surfaces with ease! Surfaces like PVC, glass, Formica, laminate, metal, and more are easily painted and stay painted. This product will easily allow the paint to adhere to the surface!
Slick Stick is a water-base primer specifically made to bond to difficult surfaces. This product is a problem solver and should not be needed on all projects.

Here’s step by step of Slick Stick!
Step 1:
First, clean your piece with White Lightning to rid your piece of wax, oils, dust, and peeling rust or paint. Follow directions on the White Lightning label. Wipe down and allow to dry. Please ensure your piece is thoroughly dry prior to painting.
Step 2:
Start with a damp brush and apply one coat of Slick Stick and allow it to dry for 2-3 hours.
Step 3:
Apply second coat of Slick Stick and allow the two layers to dry overnight.
NOTE: Surface must be thoroughly dry prior to painting.
Step 4:
Start painting! Apply Dixie Belle Paint in the color of your choice!
Now you can admire your favorite Dixie Belle Paint color on top! This will not scratch or peel at all after it has cured. Our products take 21-30 days to cure.
Please Note:
Do not pour excess Slick Stick down the drain, however it is safe to wash your brushed with warm water and soap down the drain. Do not freeze Slick Stick!
Customer Review:
“I had a super glossy piece of wood furniture and painted it with Slick Stick after thoroughly cleaning and rinsing it. Slick Stick worked like a charm! I was then able to use Dixie Belle Paint to cover both the wood doors, frame and the counter top.” – Dee Anna B.
Question? Can Slick Stick be used/applied using a paint sprayer? Thanks!
Hi Charles, yes you can use Slick Stick in a paint sprayer and there is no need to add water. Happy Painting! 🙂
Can you use other paints other than Dixie Belle with Slick Stick Bonding primer? I don’t want to use milk paint for kitchen cupboards.
Hi Val, we have not tested other paints with our products, but can assure you that Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint is compatible with Slick Stick. Check out this blog about painting kitchen cabinets with DBP: https://bit.ly/2LKTkXI 🙂
Hi, Can you use gel stain over slick stick?
Hi Lisa, we wouldn’t recommend using No Pain Gel Stain on top of Slick Stick. Depending on what type of surface you’re painting on, gel stains can be applied to factory finish or raw wood. If you use Slick Stick, the surface is going to be white so you will have to cover it completely and it will just look like the solid color of the gel stain. If you’re just trying to get a solid color, we recommend just using one of our paint colors. Hope this helps. Happy painting! 🙂
Do you have to apply 2 coats of slick stick or would one be ok?
Hi Erin, yes we recommend two coats of Slick Stick for full adhesion. Happy painting! 🙂
Can you use this on tile countertops, does the paint after applying the slick stick chip away
Hi Jessica, yes you can use Slick Stick on countertops! The paint will not chip away. The Slick Stick will adhere the paint to the surface. We recommend finishing up with Gator Hide for a water repellent and very durable finish in a high traffic area. Check out At Home with Ashley’s countertops here: https://athomewithashley.com/how-to-paint-kitchen-counter-tops/ Hope this helps! Happy painting! 🙂
Can this be used on tile surrounding a garden tub in a bathroom? Or on a laminate countertop? Thank you.
Hi Sheri, yes you can definitely use Slick Stick on both of those surfaces. We recommend using Gator Hide after you paint for a water repellent and durable finish. Happy painting! 🙂
Hi I want to use Slick Stick in my shower I want the tiles to be white, so do I need to use a white paint after the to coats of Slick Stick?
Thank you
Hi Ghislaine, yes after you’ve applied Slick Stick you need to use white chalk mineral paint on the tiles. We highly recommend using Gator Hide after the paint for a water repellent durable finish. The Gator Hide is the main key to for painted surfaces in bathrooms. Hopefully this helps, happy painting! 🙂
Can I use slick stick over oil bass paint? If so should I lightly sand first,or just clean with white lighting and use slick stick.
Hello Shellie, we do not recommend using Slick Stick with oil based paint since it is a water based product. All of our products including White Lightning are water based so we recommend using them only with other Dixie Belle Paint products. We are unsure how compatible they are with other brands. Hopefully this helps. Happy painting! 🙂
Is their a way to remove slick stick ? I have a coat on a piece of wood and would like to know is there is a way to remove it.
Hi Loyda, Slick Stick is not easily removable. You could test using a paint stripper to remove it in a small area to see if it works.
Can I use slick stick over vinyl trim around a window?
Hello Inger, if the surface is shiny or slippery then you can definitely use Slick Stick! If after cleaning the surface is more dull then you may not need to use Slick Stick.
I am painting a dresser and used a primer that was supposed to stick but it didn’t. I tried the fingernail scratch and it came right off. Do I have to remove the primer before I use Slick Stick?
Hey Connie,
You don’t have to remove the old primer, but it would be best to start fresh so the Slick Stick has a better connection with the dresser and the paint used on top!
Can I use slick stick to paint a cultured marble vanity top?
Hi Stacey,
Yes you can! Be sure to clean your piece really well before hand!
Can I use BOSS and Slick Stick together on my wood cabinets that might have tannin and are coated with many layers of poly? What do I put on first?
Hi there! Both of these products should never be used together, but out of these two Slick Stick should be the one to be used!
How does it work in high humidity? Also what type of ventilation is needed? It’s June in Georgia and I want to recycle a microwave stand. I’d like to do it inside yhe house if possible.
Hi Laurie,
No ventilation needed for Slick Stick, just DO NOT rinse down any drains! In high humidity it will take a little longer than normal to dry so be sure to let it completely dry before doing anything else to it!
When it says overnight, does that mean a full 12 hrs or can you paint it after 3-5 hrs after second coat?
Hi Hanaa,
A full 12hrs?
Can slick stick and dixie belle paints be used on tile or cement floors, let’s say in a kitchen or family room?
Hi Elizabeth,
Yes they can, both products can!
Happy painting!
I used Dixie Belle paint on furniture for my granddauther’s bedroom & the paint is chipping on the desk top & dresser top which was originally smooth as glass. I sanded lightly before painting but didn’t use Slick Stick. Can I remove the paint from the tops & use the Stick Slick?
Hi Cecilia,
No need to remove the paint if you don’t want to. You can apply Slick Stick right over all of the paint already on there.
Happy painting!
Do you have to stir the slick stick before using it?
Hi Susan! Yes, you can stir or shake Slick Stick before using it. 🙂
I’ve applied two coats of tinted Slick Stick to a veneered dining table today. I used a roller on the flat top of table and a brush on the legs and skirt. How much is even coverage of the Slick Stick a concern before I paint, meaning should I apply more to lighter spots or sand edges that have a slight bit too much? Being a large, flat table surface this is a concern that wouldn’t exist for many pieces of furniture. It seems that I wouldn’t want to sand away the task that the Slick Stick is providing but I also want it to be nice and smooth. Planning to paint with Coffee Bean tomorrow. First time Dixie Belle user.
Hi Jill! We recommend using one of our Rad Pads on our website with a fine grit. This will help smooth out your finish. You can lightly sand down the areas that are uneven. However, we recommend then going over it again with another coat of Slick Stick since some of it will be removed during sanding. Hope this helps! Happy painting!
Question: wanting to use slick stick but using caviar and gravel road paint. Can yo add color to slick stick to darken it for dark colors
Thanks
Kim
Hi Kim! If you’d like to, you can. ?
Hi, can slick stick be used on porcelain? I mean the type that china dolls are made of? I need a good quality primer so as to paint them.
Many thanks
Sally
Hi Sally! Yes, you can. ?
Can I use a stain over Slick Stix? I am NEW to painting furniture.
Hi Sharee! Yes, you can. But, you won’t be able to see the wood grain because Slick Stick is a white primer.
Hello. So glad to find a place to ask questions. I am brand new to your products. I have a large round wood coffee table with very ornate legs and sides. I want to use the Slick Stick to especially paint the ornate sides and legs. I want to use your paint for the legs and sides and decoupage with material on the top which must be white or a light color because no dark color should show through the material. My question is…. can I use the Slick Stick on the top and decoupage material over the Slick Stick? Or should I use the Slick Stick, then paint, then mod podge? Or is Slick Stick not good to use under a decoupage area because the mod podge is actually glue?
Hi Pam! From what we can tell, we’d suggest doing two coats of Slick Stick and one coat of our Chalk Mineral Paint for your decoupage.
Hi I have some shiny vinyl barstools/chairs that I want to change the color. What products and process are recommended? These will be used regularly as they are in my breakfast room so will this hold up or should this product be used for pieces that are more for looks?
Hi there! We’d recommend cleaning them thoroughly with White Lightning. From what we can tell, we’d recommend to then prime with two coats of Slick Stick. Next, paint with your color of choice. We’d recommend sealing with 3 coats of Gator Hide for extra durability. ? Happy painting!
Can you use slick stick on a mirror?
Hi Sally! Yes, you can! ?
Hello. I would like to try a craft project using an old, slightly rusty cookie tray. I want to paint using your chalk mineral paint and then decoupaging the center with paper. I have purchased the slick stick, but besides using the White Lightning and Slick Stix, what other prep work should I use regarding the rusty spots? Thank you.
Hi Shannon! We’d recommend cleaning it thoroughly and perhaps soaking it in White Lightning before priming with Slick Stick. If that doesn’t remove the rust, we’d recommend searching some rust-removal remedies. (Ketchup can remove small spots of rust.) Happy painting!! ?
Can I use high gloss trim paint over Slick stick?
Hi Evanna! We don’t test our products with other brands. You can try it on an inconspicuous section of your piece. ?
Can I paint metal radiator covers with chalk mineral paint? Some places are peeling. Should I prime it? Thank you
Hi Elaine! Are these covers going to get hot?
Will slick stick work for tannin?
Hi Kim! If your piece is slick, we’d recommend Slick Stick. If you are only concerned about bleed through, we’d recommend BOSS. ?
The sort of rubbery coating that is on something like a wire basket – will Slick Stick work on that to allow it to be painted?
Hi Pat! Yes, we’d recommend using Slick Stick. ?
Hi there, can I use slick stick on lacquered furniture? Do I need to sand it first? or strip it first?
Hi there! Yes, you can use Slick Stick without sanding. ?
put slick stick on cabinet can i use water base paint or do you have to use chalk paint please email response thank you
Hi Mary! We do not test our products with other brands. You could try it on a test board ?
Can you use slick stick on those VERY, VERY dark shiny WOOD surfaces on furniture?? Shiny enough to see your reflection in. Help! Thanks. : )
Hi Beth! Yes, you can! ?
Hello! I have a bunch of old, laminate-coated, IKEA cabinets that I’d just LOVE to update. Do I need to scuff up the laminate before adding slick stick? On a related side-note, do you have any product that could be used to fill in some dents in the cabinets before I start painting? I don’t know if wood putty would work on a laminate surface. Thank you very much!
Hi Lindsay! You do not need to scuff sand prior to Slick Stick. Just be certain to clean your piece thoroughly with White Lightning prior to using Slick Stick. ? We have a product called Dixie Mud that can be used to fill holes and dents. We would suggest applying the Dixie Mud after the Slick Stick has fully dried.
Can I use slick stick on a piece that a customer is wanting distressed? Meaning apply slick stick, let dry. Paint it black then seal with clear coat. Then apply white paint on top of clear coat. Then sand back to black in certain spots. Then gator hide entire piece.
Hi Nikki! Yes, you can do that. There is no need to seal the black paint with clear coat before painting white. 🙂
Hello. Can Slick Stick be used on doors and trim? I already have another brand of paint to paint over it.
Hi Catherine! Yes, it can. However, we have no tested Slick Stick with other brands of paint.
Hi, is there a way to store slick stick? I find it extremely difficult to open the container after I have used it and go to use it the next day. I try cleaning the edges/rim before putting the lid back on, but it always seems to glue itself shut! I have to wait for my husband to open it once he gets home. Haha.
Hi Stacie! We recommend thoroughly cleaning the rim of the container prior to putting the lid on. You could also use a scoop to get the Slick Stick out of the container if you want to avoid getting any on the rim of the container. 😊
I bought slick stick for a glossy black cabinet on which I was hoping to apply transfers. I didn’t realize that it was white. Is there another product you would recommend that will help the transfers stay on it? Thank you
Hi Sheryl! Slick Stick is a gripping primer used to help paint adhere to slippery surfaces like laminate, glass, etc. Transfers can be applied directly to our Chalk Mineral Paint and then sealed with Satin Clear Coat 🙂
I have a tall basset dresser witch is not real wood. It also has plastic decorative parts. I would like the finished product to look smooth , & even, not patchy how can I accomplish that look with slick stick?
Hi Eva! We’d recommend priming with 2 even coats of Slick Stick and then painting in your desired color 😊
Can you paint with this when pregnant?
Dixie Belle Paint is nontoxic and many people have used it while pregnant with no issues. However, it’s always best to consult with your doctor.
