There’s something special about giving new life to furniture filled with history and heart. In this project, LeeAnn from Creative Moments refreshes a solid pine, hand-crafted heart wall shelf. Once stuck in an orange-stained 80s and 90s look, it now feels timeless and updated. Whether you love vintage pieces or are new to DIY, this project is approachable. LeeAnn’s step-by-step process shows how a simple stain change makes a big impact. With creativity and a little elbow grease, cherished pieces can feel right at home again.

Bringing New Life to a Country Classic.

We’ve all seen them: those solid, well-built pine shelves from the 80s and 90s that have a lot of heart (literally) but are stuck in that unmistakable “orange” stain era. While the craftsmanship is top-tier (this one was hand crafted by my father in law), the color can often feel a bit too retro for a contemporary home.

In this tutorial, I’m showing you how to take a vintage 9-cubby wall shelf and transform it from a dated relic into a bolder, fresher, and more current statement piece. By applying a rich chestnut brown stain, we’ve traded that brassy orange hue for a deep, sophisticated tone that highlights the wood grain.

Follow along as I walk you through the prep, the staining process, and how this simple color shift completely changes the vibe of the piece—making those iconic heart cutouts feel intentional and chic rather than just “country.”

Step 1: Clean

As always the first step to any relove is a good deep clean. I used the spray version of White Lightning cleaner and a damp cloth getting into all the corners and edges. This was followed with a second pass with clean water damp cloth.

Step 2: Apply Stain

Once dry, I did a stain test on the back side trying out one of Dixie Belle Paint‘s newly released No Pain Gel Stain color Chestnut. I liked the warm brown color.

Using a blue shop towel, the chestnut No Pain Gel Stain was wiped on and allowed to penetrate for about 10 minutes. With a fresh blue shop towel, the excess was wiped off.

It is honestly that easy to update stain colors on new or previously stained wooden projects.

That “orange” pine look is a classic staple of the past, but it can definitely feel a bit dated in a modern space. Switching to a rich chestnut brown is a total game-changer—it adds a level of sophistication that the original honey oak/orange stains just can’t match.

We hope LeeAnn’s update of this heart-filled pine shelf inspires a fresh look at handmade and vintage pieces. With the right finish and care, even dated decor can feel right at home again.
