How to Paint with Wax

Painting with wax is easy peasy, especially with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax! and Gilding Wax. Check out Suzanne’s video about painting with wax here!

When using Best Dang Wax, cleaning the piece is a crucial step. We recommend White Lightning Cleaner for this step followed by a rinse with clean water. Paint one to two coats in the color of your choice as a base coat. Take a bowl and mix Best Dang Wax with the Dixie Belle Paint color of your choice. Mix to the consistency that you like to work with, similar to peanut butter.

Best Dang Wax comes in White, Clear, Black, Grown and Grunge Gray. You can mix Best Dang Wax with any Dixie Belle Paint color; however, you’ll want to keep in mind that the mixtures will vary in color based on your selections. (ie. Rustic Red and Clear Best Dang Wax will look different than Rustic Red and Black Best Dang Wax)

Once you finish your mixing, you can begin brushing the mixture onto your piece. You will want to let the paint sit for a little while and absorb into the piece and then buff the paint/wax mixture out. This will create depth and dimension.

After you’ve finished buffing, you can repeat the same process, if you’d like, with another color and layer on top of what you already have. This will create a really beautiful and unique look to your piece.

For some added flair you can mix one of the darker shades of Best Dang Wax, such as Brown or Black, with a darker Dixie Belle Paint color such as Caviar in the corners, for a rich, deep shadowing effect.

You can also paint with Gilding Wax! Gilding Wax can be mixed with Mineral Spirits so you can paint the product on. Add a little bit of the Mineral Spirits to the container of Gilding Wax and brush it onto your piece. Then you can buff the wax out with a clean cloth to reveal a really pretty gilded look. If you’d like to remove some of the gilding wax, you can use your cloth to rub on more of the Mineral Spirits to the top to expose some of the base coat underneath.

At the end of the day, the most important part of the whole process is to have fun! The products are so simple to use that it is breeze to express your creativity and personal style! Happy Painting!
