Blending is a fun and easy way to add a custom touch to your painted furniture. With a few colors and the right technique, you can create soft transitions and eye-catching effects that make your piece feel one-of-a-kind. Whether you’re going for a subtle ombré or a bold color contrast, our Chalk Mineral Paint makes blending simple—even if you’re brand new to it!

Step-by-Step: How to Blend Like a Pro

  1. Start with a damp surface.
Use your Mister Bottle to lightly mist the area you’re working on. A damp surface helps the paint move and blend more easily.
  2. Apply your first color.
Paint one section of your surface with the first color. Work in manageable areas and keep the edge wet so the next color will blend smoothly into it.
  3. Add your second color.
While the first color is still wet, apply the second color right next to it. Mist again if needed to keep the surface workable.
  4. Blend where the colors meet.
Use a clean, slightly damp brush or blending brush to gently move the two colors together. Use soft, crisscross strokes or a gentle back-and-forth motion to blur the line where they meet.
  5. Adjust as you go.
You can always go back in with more paint or water to refine your blend. If the transition is too harsh, mist and blend again. If one color takes over, layer the other back in.
  6. Let it dry.
Once you’re happy with your blend, let the paint dry completely before sealing your piece. Choose a top coat like Clear Coat, Gator Hide, or Best Dang Wax to protect your finish.

Tips for Better Blending:

  • Use similar tones (like Drop Cloth and Driftwood) for a soft blend, or high-contrast colors (like Cobalt and Peony) for bold drama.
  • Always work while the paint is still wet.
  • Don’t over-blend—sometimes less is more!
  • Practice on a sample board to get comfortable with the technique.
